TTT: Why I Want My Cats to be the Next Internet Sensation

I’ll be the first to admit that if I thought I could get my youngest cat Grace to let me photograph and video her more, I’d happily exploit her oddities so she could become the next cat internet sensation. For instance, her basketball skills, if captured, could definitely put her up there in the running. Plus, her wacky fear of hot cocoa and OCD tendencies make her the perfect candidate for internet cutedom. Until she reaches the top, here are a few of my favorite internet cat personalities.

Lil Bub!

Have you ever see a more precious baby? Here’s her story via her Facebook page. (Follow her!)

BUB has many unique characteristics that make her a very special one of a kind critter. Please understand that she was NOT bred to be this way. BUB was the runt of an otherwise healthy litter from a stray outdoor mother, and was born with several genetic mutations that make her special. She is just one of nature’s happy accidents. Her foster family had a hard time finding her a home, but she now l

ives happily with a dude that feeds her only the best food and treats her like a queen.

BUB is a “perma-kitten”, which means she will stay kitten sized and maintain kitten-like features her entire life. She is also a dwarf, which means her limbs are disproportionately small relative to the rest of her body. She has very short, stubby legs and a weird, long, serpent-like body. Her lower jaw is very short compared to her upper jaw, and her teeth never grew in (yes, that’s right, she’s toothless!), which is why her tongue is usually hanging out. Don’t worry, BUB has a very healthy appetite and eats dry and wet food with no problems. Additionally, BUB is a polydactyl cat, meaning she has extra toes, and in her case, one extra toe on all of her four paws. Her front paws each have two opposable thumbs. And then of course there are her big, bulging, wonder-filled green eyes. Some think she can see into the future with those things.

BUB squonks, squeaks, gurgles, snorts, hiccups, purrs and sometimes even growls. She also occasionally meows, but even those sound kinda funny.

Despite her weird looks and numerous “deformities”, BUB is a healthy, happy cat. She may not be able to jump on and off stuff, but she manages by climbing using her 22 claws. She also can’t quite run or walk very well… but she is a fantastic waddler. Even though she has no teeth, she has a fierce appetite, and can take down half of a bowl of dry food without any problems (the other half winds up scattered on the floor). Just like other cats, she poops and pees in the litter box, likes to chase bugs and is always cleaning her luxurious coat and sometimes even her dude’s beard.

Colonel Meow
What a face! This cat is guaranteed to make me laugh on a crummy day. Here is his Facebook bio.
I was abandoned on the side of the road and rescued by the Himalayan and Persian Society. I went to the doctor and was cleared for adoption through Petco where I met my Master, Anne Marie Avey. She cuddles me and feeds me and even sings to me which makes me happy. So happy I fall asleep.
Colonel Meow loves scotch and calls his Facebook followers “minions”. His sidekick Boots, a golden retriever, acts as his body guard. Hilarious!
Maru was the first internet cat sensation I discovered, via YouTube. She lives with her owner in Japan. Maru is an adorable Scottish Fold who loves squeezing into boxes and other tiny spaces.
If you’re a cat fan, I highly recommend you check out these fabulous personalities. They’re so much fun to keep up with!
My Healthy Tip of the Day: Make your phone background a picture of your favorite place to run or exercise. This way you’ll be reminded of why you keep pushing pavement (or trail) every time you check your phone. Here’s mine.
How could I not want to run on this every day?!

GOTR SoleMates!

I have been volunteering with the Girls on the Run (GOTR) of Monongalia County for quite some time now, but went through a period where I felt like I wasn’t doing enough. Sure I was attending board meetings and helping with the 5K, but I still felt like I needed to do more. Back in the spring, the discussion came up at one of our meetings about a new SoleMates Program coordinator position that needed filled. I wrestled with the idea for several months before I finally decided to jump right in. Man, am I glad I did!

If you aren’t familiar with GOTR, let me first give you a little spiel about that. GOTR combines training for a 5K running event with healthy living education. The programs instill self-esteem and strong values through health education, life skills development, mentoring relationships, and physical training– all of which are accomplished through an active collaboration with girls and their parents, schools, volunteers, staff, and the community. Basically, it’s a program in which young girls are provided the opportunity to get together and discuss all of the bold words above. It’s a great way to help offset or prevent the growing numbers of body image issues girls are facing earlier and earlier each year.

GOTR is constantly growing and since it’s a non-profit, it’s always looking for new ways to stay funded. That is where the SoleMates Program comes in to play. (Text below is what you’ll find on the SoleMates page of the GOTR of Mon County home page.)

The Girls on the Run SoleMates program provides adults an opportunity to raise money for Girls on the Run while training for the athletic event of their choice. SoleMates set personal goals such as running in a marathon or 10k event to raise money for our local Girls on the Run council.

Whether you are participating in your first or fiftieth marathon, by becoming a SoleMate you are doing much more than achieving your personal fitness goals. By asking friends to support your event training and participation with a donation on your behalf to Girls on the Run, you are showing your true commitment to the values we are instilling in girls everywhere to celebrate their physical and emotional health. Sign up today to be a SoleMates and let your love of running make a difference in the life of a girl.

So far, we have two SoleMates signed up and ready to go. The first is Sera Mathews. I first met Sera at the GOTR/West Virginia University Gender Equality Movement (GEM)

Yes, those are my arms and yes I cropped my face out of this picture with G.E.M. member Miranda Miller. This was taken at the screening.

hosted screening of the film MissRepresentation. Sera was interested in volunteering with GOTR, but wasn’t sure where to start. A few nights after our first meeting, I received an email from her expressing interest in the program. Beyond excited, I immediately got her started with the process. Fast forward about a week and a half and I was fortunate enough to “be in the right place at the right time.” I had stopped by our SBASE Camp office in Morgantown to meet our Council Director Laurie to pick up some SoleMates goodies. While there, I met Rachel Byrne, who was also meeting with Laurie about some GOTR business. Giving her a quick SoleMates pitch must have done the trick, because she also emailed me later in the evening about joining the program! Two SoleMates in one month! In January, Sera will be participating in the Run to Read Half Marathon in Fairmont, W.Va. as her targeted race and Rachel will be doing the Pittsburgh Marathon in July. Thanks again, girls!!

As mentioned before, if you are interested in becoming a SoleMate for the GOTR of Mon County, please contact me directly at We’re always looking for new participants and did I mention there’s a goody packet involved? 🙂

My Healthy Tip of the Day: Participate in your local SoleMates Program, of course! If you aren’t in my area, visit and do a quick search to find a council in your area. It’s a great cause and a great excuse to get active!

WIAW: Peanut Butter and Apple Butter Delight

Spooky Snacks and Healthy Halloween Treats

I’m sure I’ve mentioned before how Alex got me started eating peanut butter and apple butter together, right? Well, if I haven’t, let me take the opportunity right now to talk about how amazing this combo actually is.

*Throat clear.* The blend of warmth and tang from the apple butter spices combines perfectly with the smooth sweet and nutty flavor of the creamy peanut butter. Top this combination on toast or, my personal favorite, a warm, toasted English muffin, so the blend melts right into the nooks.

Did you read that in a smoky, sexy voice? Good. No, but seriously this combination is to die for. It’s very different than anything I’ve ever had before, but it really makes for a great PB&J alternative. Check it out!

My Healthy Choice of the Day: As I sit here rotating between tissues and cough drops, I highly advise that before this cold and flu season hits, stock up on all the cold remedies you can get. Remember, wash your hands, cover your mouth if you cough or sneeze and try to maintain a healthy diet and exercise routine to keep your immune system healthy!

NBA Grace

Before I abandon Cat Hair for the weekend, I thought I’d leave you with this video I shot about a week ago one morning before work. My old apartment complex gave me a mini basketball stress reliever as a parting gift when I moved, so I let my cats have it when they moved in. Naturally, Grace the athlete took to the sport like a pro. Check it.

Ok, so it’s no Keyboard Cat, but she’s still pretty entertaining.

My Healthy Tip of the Day: Just like humans, pets need exercise too! Keep plenty of toys around the house and engage your pet in play as often as possible. (So what if it’s not a Healthy “Human” Tip?!)

TTT: When I Need a Smile

Sometimes I find myself needing a good giggle. (Especially when I need to pull myself out of a giant hole of despair after finding a long, gray hair in my perfectly fine cup of coffee.)  Sitcoms and comedy flicks usually don’t even get a smile out of me, so that’s when I hit the internet hard for the latest in funny pictures, ridiculous news stories and cute cat videos. Here are a few of my favorite sources.

“Founded by actress/musician ZOOEY DESCHANEL, producer SOPHIA ROSSI and writer/Internet Sensation MOLLY MCALEER, is the ultimate entertainment destination for smart, independent and creative females. Everything hosted on the site will be lady-friendly, so visitors need not worry about finding the standard Boys Club content that makes many entertainment sites unappealing to so many of us.”

This site just makes me smile. The logo is great, the contributors are hilarious and the topic categories are fantastic:

Anytime I need a ridiculously funny series of photos or I just want to feel nostalgic, I visit BuzzFeed. Between the videos of corgi dogs trying to climb the stairs and simple steps to getting through the day (I’m laughing just thinking about this last one), I dare you to not laugh.

Basically, this site is a full of comics for you to view, share, like, whatever. It’s comics range from offensive, mildly offensive, and just drop dead hilarious. This site has been around for quite some time, as I remember some of my friends sharing these with me on AIM. (There’s a time frame for ya.) A few of my favorites below.

So check out any of these great sites for a guaranteed chuckle. (Insert giant, toothy smiley face here.)

WIAW: The Best Tabbouleh of My Life

Quite possibly the favorite combo of foods yet!

Of course I had to start the month off with some Campbell’s Tomato soup. I tossed some chia seeds in for good measure and let the heartburn ensue. Below that, I had sauteed spinach with some corn, an apple and rosemary roasted potatoes with rosemary from my “garden”. I’m a proud gardener! To the right, you’ll see my wonderful hummus and tabbouleh combo from Mediterranean Market in Morgantown, which I devoured in two days. Finally, I enjoyed my delicious homemade Curried Chickpea Dip.

All in all, a pretty good assortment of foods. Next week, I’m hoping to make some “healthified” pumpkin bread based on my mom’s recipe. We’ll see how it goes!

My Healthy Tip of the Day: Eating well is contagious. Today I was feeling hungry and overheard my coworker crunches on carrots. My decision to hit the vending machine quickly turned to a full-on carrot craving. Luckily I had some in my lunchbag to snack on. Navigate towards healthy eaters or try looking at some “food porn” on the internet featuring healthy items. I swear it works!
