Three Things Thursday: New Artists

TTT 06-07-12

I’ve gotten very far away from Three Things Thursdays, so allow me to take the opportunity to revive it! It’s no secret that I’m a HUGE Buffy the Vampire Slayer fan, so when I was doing my annual rewatching of the seasons, I noticed a band that was playing a pretty catchy song while the gang was hanging at the Bronze. Side note: If Morgantown had a Bronze, I would be so happy. Does anyone remember the episode when Aimee Mann played there?! Anyway, I found out that the band was called Cibo Matto, which is comprised of two Japanese women who focus on food in their lyrics. (I found this delightful.) The song is called Spoon and I’ve been obsessed with it. Ok, ok, time for TTT.

1. Cibo Matto – As I said before, this two woman band originally started their career singing about food, but later expanded their topics. The song I first discovered, Spoon, has a great indie pop beat that just feels fun. The other song featured in that same episode of Buffy was called Sugar Water. It has a very sultry, smooth texture with a prominent drum beat. The lyrics are almost spoken at first, but the chorus has a great “la la la” to it. Oh and did I mention Sean Lennon was once a member?! So cool. Anyway, check them out if you are in to a sort of indie rock/pop acid jazz sound.

2. Nicki Minaj – Well, this isn’t exactly new, but I’ve definitely found her music to be very entertaining since I started watching her on American Idol. She’s edgy, in-your-face and definitely profane with her lyrics, but darn it, she produces such catchy songs! My current favorite really shouldn’t be downloaded by anyone under 16, but if you must know, it’s titled Beez in the Trap.

3. Of Monsters and Men – This was actually a Pandora find for me. I listen to the Band of Horses station pretty frequently and they kept popping up. The first song I heard that I liked was Little Talks. This band is sort of a weird mix for me and actually took me a while to warm up to. Regardless, if you like an indie rock/folk feel, this band is for you.

Ok, that’s all for me. Get off here and go download!

TTT: Why I Want My Cats to be the Next Internet Sensation

I’ll be the first to admit that if I thought I could get my youngest cat Grace to let me photograph and video her more, I’d happily exploit her oddities so she could become the next cat internet sensation. For instance, her basketball skills, if captured, could definitely put her up there in the running. Plus, her wacky fear of hot cocoa and OCD tendencies make her the perfect candidate for internet cutedom. Until she reaches the top, here are a few of my favorite internet cat personalities.

Lil Bub!

Have you ever see a more precious baby? Here’s her story via her Facebook page. (Follow her!)

BUB has many unique characteristics that make her a very special one of a kind critter. Please understand that she was NOT bred to be this way. BUB was the runt of an otherwise healthy litter from a stray outdoor mother, and was born with several genetic mutations that make her special. She is just one of nature’s happy accidents. Her foster family had a hard time finding her a home, but she now l

ives happily with a dude that feeds her only the best food and treats her like a queen.

BUB is a “perma-kitten”, which means she will stay kitten sized and maintain kitten-like features her entire life. She is also a dwarf, which means her limbs are disproportionately small relative to the rest of her body. She has very short, stubby legs and a weird, long, serpent-like body. Her lower jaw is very short compared to her upper jaw, and her teeth never grew in (yes, that’s right, she’s toothless!), which is why her tongue is usually hanging out. Don’t worry, BUB has a very healthy appetite and eats dry and wet food with no problems. Additionally, BUB is a polydactyl cat, meaning she has extra toes, and in her case, one extra toe on all of her four paws. Her front paws each have two opposable thumbs. And then of course there are her big, bulging, wonder-filled green eyes. Some think she can see into the future with those things.

BUB squonks, squeaks, gurgles, snorts, hiccups, purrs and sometimes even growls. She also occasionally meows, but even those sound kinda funny.

Despite her weird looks and numerous “deformities”, BUB is a healthy, happy cat. She may not be able to jump on and off stuff, but she manages by climbing using her 22 claws. She also can’t quite run or walk very well… but she is a fantastic waddler. Even though she has no teeth, she has a fierce appetite, and can take down half of a bowl of dry food without any problems (the other half winds up scattered on the floor). Just like other cats, she poops and pees in the litter box, likes to chase bugs and is always cleaning her luxurious coat and sometimes even her dude’s beard.

Colonel Meow
What a face! This cat is guaranteed to make me laugh on a crummy day. Here is his Facebook bio.
I was abandoned on the side of the road and rescued by the Himalayan and Persian Society. I went to the doctor and was cleared for adoption through Petco where I met my Master, Anne Marie Avey. She cuddles me and feeds me and even sings to me which makes me happy. So happy I fall asleep.
Colonel Meow loves scotch and calls his Facebook followers “minions”. His sidekick Boots, a golden retriever, acts as his body guard. Hilarious!
Maru was the first internet cat sensation I discovered, via YouTube. She lives with her owner in Japan. Maru is an adorable Scottish Fold who loves squeezing into boxes and other tiny spaces.
If you’re a cat fan, I highly recommend you check out these fabulous personalities. They’re so much fun to keep up with!
My Healthy Tip of the Day: Make your phone background a picture of your favorite place to run or exercise. This way you’ll be reminded of why you keep pushing pavement (or trail) every time you check your phone. Here’s mine.
How could I not want to run on this every day?!

TTT: When I Need a Smile

Sometimes I find myself needing a good giggle. (Especially when I need to pull myself out of a giant hole of despair after finding a long, gray hair in my perfectly fine cup of coffee.)  Sitcoms and comedy flicks usually don’t even get a smile out of me, so that’s when I hit the internet hard for the latest in funny pictures, ridiculous news stories and cute cat videos. Here are a few of my favorite sources.

This site has been around for quite some time, as I remember some of my friends sharing these with me on AIM. (There’s a time frame for ya.) A few of my favorites below.

TTT: Cosmetics

Maybelline Baby Lips

When I went to the store last night for groceries, I wandered over to the makeup aisle, as any respectable girl would do. I picked up two new nail polishes (yayayayayayay) and some face lotion to cure my recent death-by-acne face wash. As I was rolling out, I noticed Maybelline had a mascara and lip balm bundle and let’s face it, I’m a sucker for end-of-the-aisle product placement. I knew I needed a new tube of mascara, so I decided “What the hey.” After I got it home, I immediately had to try it out. The verdict: so, so smooth! The color is a little too pink for me (Pink Punch), so I definitely apply with caution, but I love the way it smells and feels on my lips! I will definitely check out their other colors.

Maybelline Great Lash ‘Lots of Lashes’

This mascara made my lashes ridiculously long! The heart-shaped brush gave me volume, while helping me coat the tiny lashes in the corners of my eye. The verdict: great mascara for a great price. I am very pleased!

Petites Nail Polish – An affordable Wal-Mart nail product, this polish went on smooth and dried very quickly considering the two coats I had applied. The color I chose was Vintage Gray and looks nice with my light skin. I highly recommend. Sure, OPI and Essie are great, but this polish is considerably cheaper and seems to be lasting!

TTT: Hairstyles

Haircut: This is sort of what my current haircut looks like (only MUCH thicker)

Now don’t get me wrong, I love this ‘do; however I wonder if I could take it up just a little to something more like what I’ve done in the past.

Now that you’ve seen one hair style, I’ll show you three more for TTT.

At the end of my Freshman year of college, I decided to cut my bangs. They were o.k., but eventually drove me crazy when they’d grow out. I discovered very quickly that I was much more suited for a side swept bang style. Look how long my hair was!

This was a cut I got right before Christmas in 2008. I loved this cut so much, but it got boring. I could really only style it one way and that was back when I actually washed my hair every day. Exhausting!

The Carrie

This was a really fun haircut that allowed me to just let my hair fly. (My old roommate Megan in the picture above will kill me if she every sees this.) I literally took a picture of Sarah Jessica Parker’s short haircut and had my stylist recreate it. It was basically a curly version of that tacky angled bob Kate Gosselin wore. I probably would only do this again if I really needed the convenience of not fixing it.

As you can see I’ve experimented with my hair quite a bit. (I decided you spare you from the short, short hair of 2002-03. YIKES.) What sort of hairstyles have you sported?

TTT: Food, Food and More Food

Happy Three Things Thursday, everyone! I’ll start by ripping from Claire at Live and Love to Eat.

Spoons. Almost all of my favorite meals are ones that require a spoon. Cereal, ice cream, soup, yogurt, cottage cheese. Yum! I don’t know if it’s because it takes way less effort to eat these things or if it is because I spent most of my adolescence digging solid foods out of my orthodontic wear. I also love spoons because I don’t think it’s gross to lick food from them. Forks are a different story…

How hardcore would I be if I ate with these?

LoseIt. Originally, I started counting calories and tracking my fitness with an app called My Fitness Pal; however, now I’m using one called LoseIt. This app was recommended by my friend/coworker. It’s so easy to use and keeps track of how many calories you are under that week. It’s a great way to help maintain weight or even lose it. (Did you see what I did there? Sorry. That was terrible.)

Mini Reese’s Pieces. I love peanut butter and chocolate. This isn’t breaking news, but what I would consider breaking news is my discovery of the mini Reese’s Pieces I found in the baking aisle last week. Not only are they adorable, but they obviously make me feel less guilty about occasionally indulging in them. Last night, I had saved up enough calories between the workout and light lunch to have a few sprinkled into my yogurt. YUM. Highly recommend these.

TTT: Things I Won’t Drink

Tomato Juice. I’ve never tried it and probably never will, even though everyone I know loves Bloody Marys. Tough!

Red Bull. When I was younger, I was introduced to the Jager Bomb. This “classic” bar favorite was something I assumed would taste great and make me feel even better. WRONG. After that retched substance (the Jager) finally left my body the next day, I vowed never to touch the stuff again. A few weeks later, a friend of mine popped open a Red Bull, nearly sending me to a nearby bush. It was then I realized that Red Bull was the culprit that made me horrendously ill…well that and forever the smell of wing sauce.

Mellow Yellow. Maybe it’s the fact that I spent most of my youth watching my uncle spit his tobacco into a Mellow Yellow bottle that made me want to vomit at the sight of this pee colored drink, or maybe it was the actual fact that it was a pee colored drink. Whatever the reason, this drink has never touched my lips, nor do I ever plan on letting it. I’m sorry if some of you out there are a fan, but this stuff makes me cringe!

I apologize if any of these drinks are a personal favorite of yours.

In other news, I arrived home after my run to find that my Stella & Dot earrings had arrived!!

Hooray! I’ve had my eye on these bad boys for quite some time!

Before I wrap things up, let me ask you: Are there any drinks you refuse to touch?

My Healthy Tip of the Day: If you can’t face doing 30 minutes exercise a day, break it down into 3 ten-minute bursts.

TTT: Go-To Workout Moves

I’m sure I’m not the only one who has three go-to moves that give me the results I want, right? Right. So here are my tried and true go-to workout moves.

Plank. You can always count on this move to flatten and strengthen your tummy quickly. Not only will you shape up your stomach, but you’ll also strengthen your arms, back and glutes. This is one of the tough ones, but really gets the job done.

Squats/Lunges. I know it’s cheating to combine two, but they really are the best leg toners. Running aside, squats are what saved my butt from it’s terrible desk job fate. Plus, combining these targets your quads, glutes, hamstrings, and even calves, if you add variation to your motion. These suck, suck, suck, but pain means results!

Push Ups. Of course I do these with my knees down, but honestly, what girl with hyper extended joints can actually do a full one? (Rhetorical.) Do them before you head out on your sleeveless date and show the world what you’re made of.

What are your g0-to exercises?

***For some reason, this didn’t post yesterday. I’m not sure if WordPress had a fit or what, but regardless, I apologize for it NOT being Thursday. 03-30-12
